DAILY DREAM HOME – LOCAL ROCK HOUSE

Summer is slowly turning into autumn. While enjoying seasonal changes in color and weather, we slowly find ourselves already dreaming of warm summer days. This is why today’s dream home is a place where modern architecture, comfortable interiors and spectacular details meet in a summer residence on Auckland’s Waiheke Island. Known as the Local Rock House, the inspiring residence showcases its dark facade on a steep slope overlooking a white sand beach.
Architectural studio Patterson Associates have added this residence to their portfolio. Borrowing the defining pyrite rock that adorns the island, the home is deeply embedded into the surroundings, reminding owners of this natural defining feature of the island. Opened towards the beach and flooded with light by the afternoon sun, the Local Rock House boasts a modern living space, where the dining and kitchen are integrated into this public zone seamlessly connected to the outdoor pool via dark framed sliding glass doors. Above this comfortable open space, the bedrooms open towards the water while maintaining the same anchoring use of building materials as downstairs. Sustainable and efficient, the modern residence mirrors the surroundings while displaying a customized interior and exterior design. This might just be the definition of a site-specific dream home.
