Judy Garland’s `Wizard of Oz’ dress up for auction in time for Halloween
Part of American popular culture and the most-watched motion picture in history, MGM’s 1939 American musical fantasy film The Wizard of Oz, starringJudy Garland as Dorothy was noted for its use of special effects, Technicolor, fantasy storytelling and unusual characters. Besides, this fantasy tale about Dorothy’s journey to a magical land is also famous among kids for its fantasy-like costumes. And ever since the film was released back in 1939, the white puff-sleeve blouse and blue gingham pinafore worn by Dorothy has inspired countless Halloween costumes. Now, that very original dress of Judy Garland, the actress renowned for her contralto voice and bringing the magic of Oz to life, which has been known as one of the most iconic screen worn dress in film history, is up for grabs at Julien’s auction, and is expected to fetch a price of around half a million dollar. Speaking about the Wizard of Oz memorabilia, we have earlier seen the auction offering of Judy Garland’s ruby slippers where it was expected to fetch around $2.8 and $3.6 million to become the most expensive celebrity memorabilia.
Though, several identical dresses were made for the production of the Wizard of Oz, but the dress on sale is the only version seen in the fantasy film, and is the only complete original dress to survive which includes both original blouse and pinafore. Notably, celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien states that this original costume has the potential to sell for half a million dollars.
The outfit will be on view at London’s Stafford Hotel, before being exhibited at Julien’s Auction in California, from 5th to 9th November, prior to the auction of Nov. 9th to 10th.
