Style and Technology Meet in Porsche-Designed Smartphone

MAY 09, 2012

Canadian smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry has teamed up with the design arm of German automaker Porsche to create the Porsche Design P’9981 smartphone. The $2,000 P’9981 takes BlackBerry’s Bold 9900 and dresses it up with an aggressive design featuring a stainless-steel frame and black leather back cover. For the new phone, BlackBerry updated its standard application, Wikitude World Browser, with a Porsche-inspired color scheme and a directory of nearby Porsche dealerships. This augmented-reality app allows users to scan surrounding restaurants, stores, and landmarks with the phone’s camera to instantly access corresponding social-media posts, events, user reviews, articles, and nearby BlackBerry users. Like the Bold 9900, the P’9881 features a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a high-resolution display, a 1.2 GHz processor, and 8 gigabytes of standard memory, though an added microSD card boosts it to 40 gigabytes. The phone’s 5-megapixel camera comes standard with a flash, 4-times digital zoom, and high-definition video recording capabilities. (
